THE Government has finalised talks with the Swedish government to fund the construction of a power line for Nyantungo and Katooke in Kyenjojo district.

“Government is working with the Swedish government to finance this project. Procurement of the contractor will be finalised in September after which construction work will start and end before mid 2005.

This is in fulfilment of the presidential pledge to ensure that power reaches those who have not got it yet,” State minister for energy, Daudi Migereko, said.

He was speaking at the commissioning of a scheme to supply Rugombe trading centre with electricity recently.

Migereko said a power line stretching 50km, would be built at a cost of sh1.4b under the Rural Electrification Programme.

“Under the same financing, the Fort Portal-Bundibugyo-Nyahuka and Kichwamba-Sepaya electrification schemes will be developed. Other schemes will include the Coner Kilak-Patongo-Adilang-Abim and Namutere-Namayemba,” he said.

Migereko hailed the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited for its services which enabled countrywide electrification especially in rural areas.

“Before 2001, electricity coverage was 5% countrywide. In three years the Government has increased the coverage,” he said.
