Archaic, silly, retrogressive, uncouth and redundant!

SIR — Your article “DP, Movt supporters protest MP wedding” published on April 17 deserves comment. I feel it is wrong, inhuman, archaic, backward, unrealistic, unconstitutional and redundant for political differences to infringe on marital and other private rights of individuals.

We must learn to be accommodative and tolerant. Section 15, sub-section 2 of the Domestic Relations Bill states : “The consent of a parent, relative, clan elder or any other person other than the respective parties to the marriage, shall not be a requirement for the validity of any marriage solemnised, celebrated or contracted under this Act.”

So, I call upon Kagimu and Rebecca to go ahead and fulfil their cultural and religious obligations and wed if they are convinced beyond doubt that they can live together happily as husband and wife. What’s wrong with politicians!
