THE Uganda Investment Authority (UIA) executive director, Dr. Maggie Kigozi (right), has denied recent reports in The Monitor that Pakistan had rejected Uganda’s hides and skins.
“The whole issue was misunderstood Pakistan imports 98% of our leather products and therefore has not banned Uganda’s hides and skins,” Kigozi said.
She said Pakistan asked Uganda to improve the leather products by stopping the use of salt from Lake Katwe for drying hides and skins.
In a meeting with investors in the leather sector at the UIA offices in Kampala recently, Kigozi said Pakistan remained the largest importer of Uganda’s leather products and still wanted the salted and ‘wet-blue’ hides and skins which Uganda produces.
She said the local leather dealers had also confirmed that salt from Lake Katwe was not good for drying hides and its use had been stopped.
Kigozi said there were two Pakistan missions coming to Uganda to explore Ugandan markets and investment opportunities.
