MBARARA Police are investigating the death of a man believed to have been beaten to death by Nyamitanga Secondary School students.
Wilbur Karuhanga, a sugarcane farmer, died after allegedly being beaten by students following the mysterious death of their colleague over the weekend.
The body of Juma Mwebaze, a student at the school, was found floating on River Rwizi recently.
The students suspected Karuhanga of killing Mwebaze for stealing his sugarcane. The student is reported to have been the leader of a student sugar cane-stealing syndicate.
Armed with stones and clubs, the irate students beat Karuhanga into a coma and dragged him to a nearby river, accusing him of killing Mwebaze.
“We could not save the man, it was a big force of over a hundred students and ready to kill any one in their way,” a witness said.
The Mbarara district Police commander, Wilson Kwanya, said they released Karuhanga after a post-mortem report on the dead student indicated no signs of strangulation.
“We released him on Thursday after the State Attorney said he had no case to answer,” he said.
Kwanya said the Police were still carrying out investigations. “We shall bring those involved to book,” he said.
