CITY PARENTS School is going ahead to renovate Basiima House for school use. This is a shame because Basiima is one of very few old buildings of historical significance in Kampala. Over 100 years old, Sir Apollo Kaggwa’s residence should be turned into a museum for the rich Buganda heritage that badly needs conserving for posterity. The Kabaka has complained that he has no power, but it is well within his powers and his immense influence to organise funding (already available from the Getty Foundation) to preserve, among others the Kasubi Tombs and Bulange, and whatever else has been passed to him by our ancestors. Right now, Basiima risks losing its status with the World Monument’s Fund and UNESCO as being of global historical importance.
