Defiler gets 10 years

The High Court yesterday sentenced a man to 10 years in jail for defiling a nine-year-old girl. Justice Akiiki Kiiza committed Superito Semakula of Bulamazi village in Muduma, saying prosecution had proved him guilty. The prosecutor said Ssemakula committed the offence on September 12, 2001 in Bulamazi village.

Vanilla thief lynched

MUKONO —
Residents of Kasawo village in Kasawo sub-county recently beheaded a suspected vanilla thief and burnt his body. Kasawo Police post in-charge O/C boss Robert Osiwu said James Kawulukusi was found stealing vanilla from Jamir Kyambade’s garden. Osiwu warned against mob action.

Kenyans for Namugongo

NAIROBI —
Over 1,000 Catholic faithfuls on Thursday begin a two-week walking expedition from Murang’a cathedral church in Kenya’s Central province to Namugongo in Kampala to pray for peace in east Africa. Father Christopher Wanyonyi of the Bungoma cathedral said they would make stop-overs in Tororo, Iganga and Jinja parishes.

Student held over vanilla

MUKONO —
A senior three student at Trust college and two of his accomplices were on Saturday arrested for allegedly stealing vanilla worth sh1m from the garden of Annet Nankunda of Nama sub-county. Charles Kyasanku was arrested by a Reserve force personnel officer. The DPC, Luke Mbusa, said the trio would appear in court.

State ready for testimony

KAMPALA —
The State is ready to testify against Col. Poteli Kivuna, a former second division commander, accused of embezzling funds meant for UPDF operations. The prosecutor, Sam Sserw-anga, told the General Military Court Martial chaired by Lt Gen Elly Tumwine that investigations were over. The case will be heard on June 10.
