KAMPALA mayor John Ssebaana Kizito has said the strike by boda-boda cyclists on Monday was politically motivated.

“The strike had a political drive. That is why you saw cyclists carrying ebisanja. Otherwise, there was no cause for a strike because we had earlier agreed with the cyclists on the sh10,000 amount,” he said.

Ssebaana, who was opening a two-day Uganda Young Democrats (UYD) training workshop on election campaigns at Namirembe Guest House yesterday, said some people were using the cyclists to settle political scores.

He advised the youth not to get excited with politics, saying, “True, there is no money in politics, but you may instead incur expenses.”
Ssebaana hailed UYD for maintaining unity for the last eight years.

About 1,000 cyclists demonstrated on Monday chanting pro-third term slogans and demanding the scrapping of the sh10,000 sticker fee.

The workshop is sponsored by the Norwegian Youth Labour movement.
