THE district council in Soroti has demanded that the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) pays sh29m as rent arrears for the district houses occupied by army officers.
During a recent finance committee meeting, councillors said the army had ignored numerous reminders telling them to pay the rent.
The chairman, Charles Elasu, said revenue collection was poor and the district lacked funds to carry out its work, adding that they were adopting alternative sources of revenue.
They agreed to select a team to go to the army headquarters and demand for the money.
However, UPDF 3rd Division commander Lt Col. Silver Kayemba denied knowledge of any rent arrears for residential premises.
