Yet another regional beauty contest, and another 23-year-old girl plans to win the national crown.
Two years after Dr. Rehma Nakuya won the Western regional finals of the Miss Uganda beauty contest, Percy Nabiryo, also 23, won the Jinja regional finals held at the Crested Crane Hotel on Saturday.
Nakuya went on to win the Miss Uganda title, and Nabiryo plans to do the same.
“I entered this because I want to win it all, otherwise why bother?” she asked at a press conference after the contest.
“I waited till I was ready, till I had finished my studies and was mature enough to understand what I am doing and why. That is why I am here, and hope I can go the whole way,” Nabiryo said.
Nabiryo, from Kamuli district, a recent graduate from Kyambogo University with a diploma in food processing technology, and working with the Uganda In-flight Services in Entebbe, beat a field of 13 girls to win the regional title, but one of the girls got another chance when they all qualified to participate in the Kampala pre-selections to be held at Kabira Country Club in Bukoto on June 12.
Haggar Lukungu, 18, from Iganga, a Senior 6 leaver, was the first runner-up, while 20-year-old Ruth Isina from Kaberamaido, one of the crowd’s favourites (others were Maureen Nambuya and Shanice Mbeiza), was the third runner-up.
