THE pastoral coordinator of Masaka Diocese, Fr. Joseph Kaganda, has asked Ugandans to give due recognition to local places of historical and religious significance.
Addressing a group of pilgrims from Kampala to Kitovu Cathedral in Masaka recently, Kaganda said it was ironic for people from Europe to make pilgrimages to such places as Namugongo Martyrs’ shrine while only a few Ugandans took interest in the same.
Kaganda said Kitovu Cathedral was significant in the history of the Church and urged Christians to visit it regularly. Kitovu was the first African Cathedral south of the Sahara.
In 1998, the America-based World Monument Watch recognised the cathedral as a world monument for preservation.
It was the seat of the first black African Bishop and was the only church with the pipe organ, the official church musical instrument recommended by the Vatican Council.
