THE Reform Agenda spokesperson, Betty Kamya, has defended prostitution.

“I’m not promoting immorality but I would like to see MPs discussing what happens when one is away from a partner for a long time. The alternative is to get a partner whom society will accept because sex is a basic need,” she said.

Kamya was yesterday appearing before the parliamentary committee on pornography chaired by Sarah Kiyingi (MP Rakai), in relation to her pro-prostitution article in The New Vision recently.

She said prostitution had a role in stabilising families and needed to be looked at objectively.

“When you legitimise and legalise prostitution, you can regularise it so that it is not abused. The demand is there and what the Government should do is to designate places and regulations on age. You will be solving the problem rather than pretending that prostitution does not take place.”
Kamya said the legalisation of prostitution required public awareness.

She said she had no problem with a man who picks a prostitute in the streets to satisfy his desire.

Hamlet Kabushenga (Kinkizi West) said Kamya’s position would glamourise prostitution more than before.

He said as a leader, Kamya risked being misunderstood as advocating legalising prostitution.
Kabushenga said prostitution was a question of victimisation, not of choice.

The Bujenje MP, Kabakumba Matsiko, who emphasised ethics, said the way forward was to curb prostitution not to legalise it.
Kiyingi attributed prostitution to the rampant unemployment among the educated youth.
