KAMPALA – An ex-death row inmate has appealed to the Government to abolish capital punishment. “In my experience, people reform when taken to prison. People commit terrible crimes, but execution is not the answer,” Eddie Mpagi told journalists recently. Mpagi, who is currently a catechist in Kamwokya Catholic Parish in Kampala Archdiocese, spent 19 years in Luzira Maximum Prison before President Yoweri Museveni pardoned him and 16 others.

KAMPALA — Buganda Road Court Magistrate Susan Kanyange recently dismissed forgery charges against three directors of Hassan Basajjabalaba’s Victoria International Trading Company. Aisha Mulungi, Arinaitwe Sowedi and Asuman Irungu being accused of forging documents to win a tender to manage St Balikuddembe Market in 2002. Kanyange said there was lack of prosecution

Two arrested
KAMPALA — Kira Road Police have arrested two men alleged to have murdered a Local Defence Unit personnel in Fort Portal last month. Acting on a tip-off, the Police arrested James Sanyu and David Agaba in a kafunda (local bar) in Kifumbira, Kamwokya on Sunday night. The duo allegedly murdered John Nyakairu from Kyamuhoro village and vanished with his gun.

Hubby killed
RAKAI — The Police are hunting for a woman who allegedly stabbed her husband to death. Tumukunde Gertrude of Kalwahi village in Kyalulangira sub-county is said to have killed Sylvesta Kayaali using a panga on Friday night after a domestic brawl. Agnes Tumulani, the couple’s daughter, informed the Police the following morning.

MP hails
MUBENDE — The minister for state in charge of regional cooperation, Dr Augustine Nshimye Sebutulo, has emphasised the importance of labour in the economic development of Uganda. He advised residents to grow marketable crops. Sebutulo, who is Mityana South MP, was speaking at the district Labour Day celebrations recently.
