MAKERERE University vice-chancellor Prof. Livingstone Luboobi has said there is need for more professors to promote research at the university, reports Fortunate Ahimbisibwe.

“There is need for more professors to strengthen research and promote academics as a profession,” said Luboobi.

He was speaking at the inaugural lecture of former faculty of Arts dean and vice-chancellorship contestant, Prof. Oswald Ndoleriire.
Ndoleriire, a linguistics professor, was recently being inaugurated into professorship at the university Main Building.

Luboobi urged professors who had not presented their inaugural lectures to respect the tradition and do so.

“It is the ritual of this institution that everyone who becomes a professor must present an inaugural lecture. I know of many professors who have not complied. They should come forward and do it. This is a challenge,” he said.

Ndoleriire said Uganda and Africa were losing culture to the western world.

“All the advanced countries of the world educate their citizens up to university in their native languages,” he said.

“One key problem with Uganda and many other African countries, is making policies and doing nothing about them, especially if those policies do not have an immediate economic impact,” Ndoleriire said.

He added, “We must look at the most valuable resource Africa has, namely, its people. It is these people, if empowered culturally and intellectually, who will get Africa out of its present quagmire.”
