DEFENCE minister Amama Mbabazi has denied press reports that Democratic Republic of Congo renegade rebel, Gen. Laurent Nkunda, has contacted President Yoweri Museveni to help avert more civil war in the country.

A local daily yesterday reported that Nkunda, who briefly took over Bukavu town early this month, had met and appealed to Museveni to ask his DRC counterpart, Joseph Kabila, set up an independent investigation into alleged massacres of Banyamulenge (ethnic Tutsi) in Bukavu.
Army spokesperson Maj. Shaban Bantariza yesterday said the issue could be handled by the UN and African Union, among other stakeholders.
He said the story was false.
