THE UPDF yesterday captured Joseph Kony’s chief escort Lt. Col. Francis Okwonga Alero, 40km west of Gulu town.

He was classified as a ‘high value target’ by the UPDF.

Okwonga, 42, formerly of the National Resistance Army, defected to the LRA in 1996 after a two-year stint in Luzira for treason.

He was netted in the morning at Labala, Lamogi sub-county, hiding in thickets with gunshot wounds he suffered when his battalion was ambushed by the UPDF on June 21.

The UPDF said 17 rebels were killed while others fled but Okwonga and two of his teenage wives and three children, a one-year old girl and two boys aged 13 and 14, hid.

The rebel commander and his family were driven to Gulu army barracks where they were getting treatment.

Speaking in Acholi, a weeping Okwonga said, “The UPDF is very disciplined. I identified myself and begged that they don’t kill me and they did not. I thank God.”
