SCRATCH golfer Deo Akope has vowed to get the Kenya amateur matchplay championship title after two close attempts.
The former three-time national champion, opens his bid when the 72-hole event tees off tomorrow.
The event, set for the par-72 Royal Nairobi Club, has attracted several other big names from East Africa.
Akope will get the feel of the tournament a few minutes after reaching the city today.
“I am in the right frame of mind, have had many days of good training and should return victorious,†Akope said before departure yesterday.
Akope lost 3-2 to eventual winner, Kopan Timbe of Kenya, last year after bowing out in the semi finals in 2001.
“I will meet the same old faces and I am ready for them,†Akope said.
Timbe is defending his title against a talented opposition. The holders’ countrymen including David Odhiambo, Sunny Mangat and Wachira Mahihu are in action.
The Tanzanian group includes Shaban Omari, Mohammed Adam, Daniel Bakali and Ahmed Shah.
Kobil Uganda has pumped sh8m in the fifth edition of the Lugazi Open Golf Tournament due this weekend at Mehta Golf Club.
Kobil, that has exclusively sponsored the 36-holes tournament this year, announced the offer at the company’s premises at Nalukolongo industrial area yesterday.
“Kobil’s sponsorship for this event for the third year running fulfills its commitment to sports,†Kobil director marketing Edwin Kinyua said after handing over the cheque to Mehta Golf Club captain Simon Kego.
Kinyua said, “We are doing all this to remind you that Kobil cares for you.â€
