Members of Parliament have advised the government to appoint a fully-fledged attorney general to ease the Government’s legal work.

Abdu Katuntu (Bugweri) said justice minister Janat Mukwaya was not expected to explain all the legal issues because she was not a lawyer.

“The principal legal advisor to the government is the attorney general. I don’t think the ministers can legally, competently explain to the House all legal issues,” he said on Tuesday.

However, Mukwaya said the Interpretation Act states that in the absence of an attorney general, the solicitor general, Lucien Tibaruha, represents the attorney general.

The post fell vacant after the death of Francis Ayume in May.
