STATE minister for mineral development Dr. Kamanda Bataringaya has directed Busia district authorities to arbitrate in a land wrangle. The chief administrative officer, Charles Okello, is to is to lead the team.

Residents of Tiira parish accuse Busitema Mining Company if grabbing their land.

Bataringaya said, “The Government leased out the land to the company for mining purposes for a period of 21 years.” The lease was granted in 1994.

He was on Friday meeting the affected families, management of Busitema Mining Company and Busia district officials at Tiira trading centre.

The minister said the district authorities ought to mediate in the land dispute and foster a good working relationship between the investor and the residents.

“All over the world, mining comes with problems of land, so we just need to learn how to co-exist because the Government needs taxes to fund its programmes,” he said.

He said the mine would generate royalties for Busia district.
