NATIONAL Council of Sports (NCS) acting general secretary Jasper Aligawesa has condemned a FUFA executive plan to extend its tenure in office by a year, labelling the move “disturbing and unconstitutional.”
Reacting to the term-extension FUFA story run in The New Vision yesterday, Aligawesa vowed that any attempts by FUFA officials to entrench themselves in power would be met by disapproval and stern measures from NCS.
“I’m very disturbed by this development. FUFA’s executive is constitutionally supposed to serve a three-year term and their decision should be condemned by all sports-loving and democratic Ugandans.”
He warned: “NCS will certainly not approve of it and we’re prepared to oppose it using the authority at our disposal.”
Aligawesa said that brazen and illegal amendments of constitutions of various associations by selfish, power-hungry officials are quickly turning into a culture that must be fought.
FUFA intend to put the issue to the general assembly soon.
If the proposal gets the green light, there will be no FUFA elections until next year.
He disclosed that FUFA’s proposal for an extended term comes hot on the heels of a similar manoeuvre by their athletics counterparts and urged the sports associations to forget their selfish motives and respect their respective constitutions.
“I think it’s becoming a culture (to change) for sports associations in Uganda. UAF has gone ahead to amend its constitution, and as we’re still dealing with them, FUFA does the same.”
“We’re bitterly opposed to UAF and FUFA is going to suffer the same treatment.”
The UAAF assembly met in July and amended their constitution adding two more years to their two-year tenure and renaming themselves UAF.
Aligawesa called upon FUFA and UAF to emulate their cricket and motorsport colleagues who have rigidly upheld and preserved the sanctity of their constitutions.
“Due to their high regard for their constitutions, UCA and FMU are currently top among the most efficient associations,” the NCS chief said.
