KAKIRA Sugar Works (KSW) has over 80,000 bags (4,000 tonnes) of unsold sugar after uncontrolled imports of the product continue to eat away the available small market, the firm’s managing director, Mayur Madhvani, said recently.

“We are not selling our sugar and its piling up. We are disappointed with the authorities for failing to tighten up on the smuggling of sugar,” Madhvani said.

Uganda’s per capita consumption of sugar is 9.5kg, while 12kg and 14kg are for Tanzania and Kenya respectively. Any unchecked dumping of sugar can choke local producers.

KSW, Uganda’s leading manufacturer of sugar, has a sh67b expansion plan in offing.
