KAMPALA City Council (KCC) on Wednesday announced an increase in market charges aimed at boosting its tax base, reports <b>Catherine Ntabadde.</b>

KAMPALA City Council (KCC) on Wednesday announced an increase in market charges aimed at boosting its tax base, reports Catherine Ntabadde.
The charges, which had not been increased since 2001, cover 28 KCC markets with effect from January 2005, the city director of finance, Prossy Ssebina, said.
She said KCC’s charges were lower than those in other districts and municipalities.
Market stalls in St. Balikuddembe Market were increased from sh9,000 to sh13,500 per month. The cost of stalls in Nakasero Market ranges from sh10,500-60,000 while shops now cost sh100,000, per month. Rent for lock up shops in Nakasero Market range from sh150,000-500,000.

Ssebina asked market managers to ensure that the approved charges are paid by the vendors to enable KCC deliver services to the people.
