Local dishes galore at Sisters

When one speaks of decent local food in and around Kampala two places come to mind: Nnalongo’s in Katwe and All Sisters Restaurant in Ndeeba. The former has been around for over half a century and the latter close to two decades.

When one speaks of decent local food in and around Kampala two places come to mind: Nnalongo’s in Katwe and All Sisters Restaurant in Ndeeba. The former has been around for over half a century and the latter close to two decades.

All Sisters was the brainchild of three siblings who decided to open an eating joint at a time when Ndeeba was not the thriving suburb it is today. Today, Ms. Birabwa runs the place while the others would appear to be economic refugees abroad.

Judging by their clientele, the majority of diners appear to be the well to do from the city centre who do not think twice about driving a few miles for a good meal.

The menu is simple and has been around for donkey years. As far as I am concerned, it has never changed. There is a choice of beef stew, chicken stew, goat stew and huge chunks of tilapia steak, which can easily be shared by two. They serve two types of rice, pilao and plain steamed. The pilao was greatly lacking in character and form.

The fashion here is to serve the main course with a mixture of beans, greens, peas and whatever else happens to be on hand.

The food is simple and wholesome. The service is predictable and efficient. Over time All Sisters has distinguished itself as being the kind of place where one is always assured of the same type of food that is always well prepared. Take the matooke, for instance, truly outstanding.

The place is small and tends to get packed. So it is advisable to either come early or after two. A meal for two including a couple of soft drinks will set you back no more than a tenner.

For that kind of price, All Sisters Restaurant is a bargain and remains one of our preferred joints for traditional fare.
