VISITING Nigerian Vice-President Alhaji Abubakar Atiku has called for the merging of regional economic unions into one strong continental body.
“The old economic structures and unions that existed before independence must be revived and afterwards merge the regional unions into one body for the betterment of the continent,” Atiku said in Kampala on Friday.
He added that economic integration was the key to poverty eradication in Africa, citing the West African economic body, ECOWAS, which he said was moving towards adopting a single currency for all member states.
“Economic integration is one of the sure ways of reducing poverty, no body will rid the continent of poverty except we the Africans,” he said.
He also asked the Government to support the private sector during bilateral talks he held with Vice-President Prof. Gilbert Bukenya at the International Conference centre.
