THE minister of State for Energy, Daudi Migereko, has attributed the current load-shedding in the country to the high rate of economic development.
Migereko said the increasing demand and high consumption of electric power had transcended their capacity, adding that the Government was working hard to rectify the situation.
He was addressing residents of Jinja district at the 42nd independence anniversary at Busoga Square on Saturday.
Migereko said the Government’s priority was to develop more power generation stations.
“But in the meantime, we are encouraging emerging private companies such as Kakira to step up their power production. We shall also import some from other countries like Kenya,” he said
Migereko expressed dismay over the vandalisation of electric cables and poles, saying it undermined the rural electrification programme, which he said was one of the government’s achievements that should be consolidated.
He urged the police and local leaders to arrest the culprits and charge them.
“There are people determined to retard the pace of economic development but we should not look on,” he said
Migereko advised the district leaders to use the Sh 160 million loyalties from the Electricity Generation Company to put up incentives for attracting investors.
Jinja mayor David Wakudumira warned residents to be on the look out for people aimed at destroying the achievements that the country has struggled attain in the last 42 years.
He said the area leaders were lobbying for a public university in Jinja. He said this would make the town prosper and regain its former glory.
The L.C 5 chairman Fred Gume, RDC Mugisha Muhwezi, area MPs, councillors and technical personnel attended.
