MUKONO district chairman Godfrey Ddamulira has urged the Government to seek economic independence to make the annual Independence Day celebrations realistic.

MUKONO district chairman Godfrey Ddamulira has urged the Government to seek economic independence to make the annual Independence Day celebrations realistic.
He said the fact that Ugandans elected their own leaders did not imply independence because of continued reliance on foreign aid.
Ddamulira said this at the Independence Day celebrations at Njeru town council playground on Saturday.
“We have to depend on our local resources to get economic independence. We should stop relying on foreign aid to fund our national budget. This is not economic independence and it makes our 42nd Independence Day celebrations incomplete and unnatural,†he said.
Ddamulira said developed countries still practised neocolonialism because they attached strings to the aid.
He said the aid sometimes had political effects and, “Some of them even state it that ‘We are giving you this aid on condition that the President stands for only two terms’.â€
Ddamulira said if Ugandans were pleased with President Yoweri Museveni’s governance, no one should stop them from giving him ekisanja (another term in office).
Resident district commissioner Deo Nsereko, Mukono Woman MP Lydia Balemezi, and Buikwe North MP, Wagonda Muguli attended the function.
Nsereko handed over certificates to 500 teachers who underwent a chakamchaka (cadre) course in the district.
