The state minister for primary health care, Dr. Alex Kamugisha, inaugurated a five-year Nutrition and Early Childhood Development Project (NECDP) II task force at the health ministry headquarters on Friday.

NECDP II follows the one that covered 34 districts, basing on factors like infant mortality rate, prevalence of malnutrition, stunting and children population.

Kamugisha said although there was no deliberate effort in the first project to have strong institutions put in place, the second phase would recognise their importance especially in the countryside, where services are most needed.

He said the task force would address issues that lead or are related to increasing poor child health care.

The project estimated to cost over US$34m is targeting the improvement of the quality of life of all Ugandan children below six years, through health promotion, nutrition, cognitive and psychosocial development.
