State minister for primary health care Dr. Alex Kamugisha has advised immunisation health workers to develop an integrated approach that targets beneficiaries.

Officiating at a regional immunisation meeting on Reaching Every District (RED) at Munyonyo in Kampala on Monday, Kamugisha said the issue of immunisation was elusive and it needed the public’s involvement.

In a speech read by energy state minister Daudi Migereko, Kamugisha said, “It is imperative that we focus on the district level, where services are needed to eradicate poverty and eliminate diseases such as polio, measles and neonatal tetanus, to achieve the Millennium development Goals.”
He said the number of suspected measles victims had dropped from 4,000 cases monthly to less than 500.

Kamugisha said this resulted into a drop of fatality rate to almost zero percent.

He urged participants to address barriers in the health system for a speedy and cohesive implementation of the RED strategy.
Kamugisha told participants to set up collaborative efforts for sharing experiences, knowledge and lessons of successes on a regular basis.

The WHO country representative, Dr. Oladapo Walker, hailed the health ministry for its efforts against polio and guinea worm.
“The coverage that was at 84% is now at 94%. The 10% increase is not a mean feat. We shall cover every child,” Walker said.

He thanked the government for providing a conducive environment for WHO activities, which have had a significant impact on health.
He called for immunisation monitoring and surveillance systems to document progress and the impact of the activities.
