It was a day for the children who took part in the Design and Advert competition to smile. The six-week competition saw three winners walk home with prizes amounting to sh1m, on Saturday, December 18, 2004.

Willy Lukyamuzi of Bright Star Academy in Mubende was crowned overall winner. He got sh500,000. He said he would give some of the money to his father to boost his business and the rest to his mother to pay his school fees in Senior One next term.

Dorothy Nabulya of Revival Day and Boarding Primary School in Mattuga on Bombo Road came second. She got sh300,000.

Leonard Wamala of Buyala Junior School on Mityana Road was third and he got sh200,000.

The winners also got shoes, bags and splash drinks.

Tom Wasswa, New Vision’s circulation manager, handed the prizes to the winners at The New Vision head offiice in Kampala.
Barbara Kaija, the Features Editor and Juliet Nabwire, the Children’s Editor were also present.

Three teachers, Eva Namanda of Kampala Parents, Juma Teddy of City Parents School, Lady Justine of Seeta Day and Boarding Primary School, who provided back up support to the children were also awarded.

Kaija said this was the second year the competition, co-sponsored by MTN, BATA and Britania, was being held.

She said the aim of the competition was to encourage creativity in children and promote the reading of The New Vision newspaper by children.

She thanked the sponsors and said without them, it would not have been possible to organise the competition. She said it also helps advertisers to find out how children perceive their products.

A total of 1,987 children countrywide participated in the competition in which they drew advertisements of the sponsors, MTN, Bata and Splash.

The New Vision also gave out sh50,000 every week to the children who came up with the best advert for MTN, BATA and Splash.

The three weekly winners were then considered during the final competition in which judges, with a background in fine art, picked the overall winners.
