By Samson Opus BOXERS braved the sweltering heat in the national gymnasium yesterday after National Council of Sports (NCS) barred the Bika championship from the Lugogo indoor stadium over non-payment for the facility. NCS is demanding sh45,000 per day for the five days Buganda Boxing Committee (BBC) is running the tournament. The cash-strapped BBC was further compounded by failure of most of the 11 clans to clear the sh20,000 participation fee.BBC secretary Mohammed Sebuguzi promised to plead further with the Lugogo authorities.“We are still negotiating with council (NCS) but if they refuse we shall continue in the gym,” said Sebuguzi.A heavy smell of sweat hung over the gymnasium that accommodates just a ring. The boxers’ plight was worsened, as they fought in a ring without canvas padding.“It is the love of the game that we are braving this heat,” said one boxer.Ffumbe consolidated their grip on top of the event after garnering 17 points as the event entered the semi-finals stage yesterday.ends
