30,000 war widows to get funds

THE Government is soliciting funds from donors to pay at least 30,000 war widows as gratuity for their fallen husbands beginning July this year, a mobiliser in the office of the Military Assistant to the President, Brig. Kale Kaihura, has said.

Kale Kaihura, has said.Joy Turyamureeba, the in-charge of the war widows in Kaihura’s office, said they would be paid through the Office of the President and not the Ministry of Defence as has been the practice. Turyamureeba met 23 widows at the Masindi Teachers’ Resource Centre on Friday.“The President is aware that getting paid at Bombo (Ministry of Defence headquarters) has been an inconvenience to you. That is why he has given me this task,” Turyamureeba said.She said beneficiaries would include wives of officers and men of all post-independence national armies. She said they would be paid at their district headquarters.A four-member committee was elected to represent the widows at future discussions.
