KAMPALA – Uganda has appealed to parties involved in renewed fighting in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to return to the negotiating table, so as to give peace a chance. “We are re-stating to them our position that the only viable solution to the Congolese problem will be via negotiation not through war,” Defence Minister Amama Mbabazi told AFP in a phone interview yesterday. “We urge the parties involved in the fighting, to return to the negotiating table for the good of the DRC and its people,” Mbabazi added. Without being specific, Mbabazi asked “those responsible” to force the parties to stop the fighting, which threatens the fragile key talks on the DRC’s future, taking place in the South African resort of Sun City. The Kinshasa government walked out of the talks on Thursday, after accusing the Rwandan army of launching “massive and violent attacks” on Moliro, while France accused Rwanda at the UN Security Council of supplying 10,000 troops for the assault.
