After many weeks of intensive and all round artillery shelling and massive troop deployment in southern Sudan, the UPDF yesterday said its soldiers on the weekend dislodged Kony rebels from the strategic Acholi hills. Emmy Allio writes that the army also dismissed as “wishful thinking” media reports yesterday that over 70 UPDF soldiers were feared dead in southern Sudan.“The story of 70 UPDF dead is real wishful thinking by those who probably would like to hear that Kony has killed our soldiers. Unfortunately, for these day-dreamers, the reverse is happening in Sudan,” army spokesman Major Shaban Bantariza said. He said the fighting in Sudan was not frontal, but mostly through ambushes. Bantariza said, “At least three times, they (the rebels ) tried to ambush us, but they were shocked to find out that their company was facing a brigade. We are employing massive firepower, he said.” He said massive deployment on Acholi hills had forced about 1,500 rebels to flee.Ends
