Fraudulent Vehicle Importers Rile MPs

MEMBERS of Parliament have asked the government to revoke the trading licence for vehicle importers Punjan Motors, for allegedly defrauding State institutions.

By Richard MutumbaMEMBERS of Parliament have asked the government to revoke the trading licence for vehicle importers Punjan Motors, for allegedly defrauding State institutions.The MPs were yesterday scrutinising the Auditor General’s report on the ministry of Education and Sports, where it bought five used vehicles believed to be new from Punjan.“The Government should revoke Punjan Motors’ trading licence. This is the same company which caused problems over the MPs vehicle scheme,” Dr. Okullo Epak (Oyam South) said yesterday without elaborating.Bukoto West MP Mulindwa Birimumaso had proposed that Punjan Motors be blacklisted. He said it should cease to deal with government institutions. The parliamentary public accounts committee had earlier learnt that Punjan supplied vehicles to the Ministry of Finance and the President’s Office.Gordon Wavamunno, said because Punjan was not a member of Uganda Motors Industries Association, the association could not compel it to trade responsibly.
