A RWANDESE refugee of Hutu ethnic origin on Saturday invaded a home of a Ugandan on the outskirts of Nakivale resettlement camp and hacked four family members, killing one instantly.
Police identified the assailant as Vincent Majambere, a male adult and said they arrested him before he could escape to the neighbouring Bukoba district in Tanzania.
Three family members, two children aged between three and seven and their mother, are admitted at Mbarara teaching hospital in critical condition.
A refugee at Nakivale said the Hutu Rwandese have, since they came into Uganda through Tanzania close to two years ago, been accusing some nationals near the camp of being Rwandese of Tutsi ethnicity or manekos (intelligence officers) of the Rwanda government.
“We suspect it could have been the root cause,” the source said on Sunday.
Relatives nursing the victims told The New Vision that there was no quarrel or fight.
“He just came (the assailant) armed with a machete and started cutting whoever was in sight,” the relatives said.
The Mbarara Officer in Charge of the Criminal Investigations Department, Jonathan Edoku, said on Sunday that Police detectives were investigating the case.
The parish chief, Frank Minane, said there had been several land wrangles between the refugees and Ugandans around the camps. Ends
