THE census exercise in Murembe area in Wanka, Ntoroko sub-county in Bundibugyo district was stalled for over 10 hours on Friday following a border dispute between residents of Bundibugyo and Kabarole districts.

The district census officer, Charles Mwesige, said the confusion started when enumerators were told that Murembe belonged to Kabarole enumeration area.

Residents said a scuffle ensued when both sides insisted on recording the village population.

Bundibugyo police commander Charles Adoa and the district internal security officer, Lt. Fred Mugasa, rushed to the area to stop the chaos between the parish chiefs and the residents.

Adoa said the confusion was created by the parish chiefs.

“The area clearly belongs to Bundibugyo but there was some misunderstandings with the area chiefs,” he said.

Mwesige said the exercise started late. Some enumerators complained that they were not given money for transport and lunch.
