At least 62% of the households in Masindi district have no latrines, pausing a serous threat of a cholera break out, a baseline survey has revealed.
The survey was carried out by Basic Support for Institutionalising Child Survival (BASICS) II, a programme funded by the United States Agency for International Development early this year.
Dr Abeja Apunyo, the country programme team leader, released the findings to Masindi district leaders on Friday.
The LC5 executive, LC3 chairpersons and district departmental heads attended the meeting at Kolping House.
Abeja said six sub-counties were sampled to represent urban, peri-urban and rural areas of the district. They included Budongo, Bulisa and Kimengo.
Others were Kiryandongo, Pakanyi and Masindi Town Council. She said the survey was aimed at providing information that could be used for advocacy and mobilisation.
“I am not surprised that cholera is endemic in parts of the district,” she said. The acting district director of health services, Dr Imam Mutyaba, had reported that cholera was endemic in the district.
The district chairman, John Magara, called for intensive child health improvement campaign. Ends
