THE Kigo Prison authorities rejected the key suspect in the murder of a Kampala businessman, James Kaggwa Ssemwezi, where the General Court-Martial sent him for remand on September 19.

Solomon Muyita and Geoffrey Muhoozi write that the now malnourished Hasib Kasiita, 30, a trader of Kyanja on Gayaza Road, one of the nine accused in the case, whose legs and arm were shattered by bullets during his arrest, was produced to court on a stretcher before explaining his ordeal to the court.

“As soon as I arrived at the Kigo Prison gate, the medical assistant (not named) denied me entry at the gate, saying I was in bad health until I was brought back and dumped at Makindye Military Police Barracks,” Kasiita told the court chaired by Lt. Gen. Elly Tumwine.

His advocate, Sgt. Mugerwa Lukwago, said the Makindye authorities have since denied his client medical attention, awaiting approval from the court.

“He was supposed to go for the plastering of his legs, but he can’t without the court order,” he said.

But Tumwine directed that Kyanja be returned to Kigo Prison.
