A MAKERERE University student was killed yesterday after his car collided head-on with a Presidential Protection Unit (PPU) convoy lead car at Kawuku on the Kampala-Entebbe highway.

Deo Mpagi, said to be a student of Makerere University Business School (MUBS) based in Nakawa, a Kampala suburb, was driving in a long line of cars from Entebbe when the accident occurred.

Two PPU officers, Lt. Kamyuka and his driver, Pte. Christopher Amari, occupants in the lead car, were critically injured and were rushed to the nearby Kisubi Missionary Hospital.

The convoy was heading for Entebbe international Airport at about 10:30am to pick President Yoweri Museveni, who was returning from a trip to Tanzania, Mary Okurut, the Presidential Press Secretary, said in a statement yesterday.

Museveni had met DR Congo President Joseph Kabila in Dar-es-Salaam.

The Police spokesman, Asuman Mugenyi, said Mpagi abruptly swerved to the right hand side of the road in an attempt to overtake other cars.

He said a Police patrol car had passed to clear the way.

“He may have mistaken it to be an ordinary Police car. He was hit by the PPU Mercedes Benz, UP 0196, and both cars overturned. He died instantly,” Mugenyi explained.

The Police traffic chief, Wilson Ahimbisibwe, visited the scene and helped the injured to get to the hospital.
