MPs and Ministers: Comparison with other countries

Uganda has got one of the largest cabinets in the world. While the constitution allows for only 42 ministers, Uganda has got 66 of them. Uganda competes with India, which has 70 but India has got a population of more than a billion people

It is however worthy noting that India has got a population of a billion people, compared to Uganda’s 24million. Uganda's income per capita is $1,200 with 35% of the population living below the poverty line.

  • Kenya with a population of 31 million has 222 MPs (221 directly elected). Their income per capita is $1,000, with 50% of its citizens living below the poverty line.

  • Nigeria with a population of 120 million has got 55 ministers.

  • The United Kingdom has got 52 ministers. The House of commons, which is similar to the Ugandan Parliament, since its members are elected by universal human suffrage, has got 659 members.

  • South Korea has 25 ministers and two ministers of state for a population of 48 million. The Korean national assembly has got a total of 299 members. Of these, 224 are elected directly, while 75 are elected from special groups, just like Uganda's electoral colleges. Advisors are called upon whenever there is a need. Their income per capita is $18,000, and 4% of the population live below the poverty line.

  • Switzerland, one of the richest countries in the world has got less than 10 ministers. They have 246 MPs.
