The MP for Amuria county in Katakwi district, Ben Etonu, has said he had no regrets for an incident in which the Katakwi militia tortured and killed some district leaders from Karamoja in Wera sub-county in 1982.

He said the victims of the torture, who included the Obote II regime deputy minister for transport, Joshua Akol, and former Kotido South MP, Henry Obonyo Jabwor, were to blame for the incident after they secretly entered the district and proceeded to the barracks for the Peoples Militia without informing the authorities in Soroti.

Etonu gave his defence during a workshop for top political leaders on the combined efforts for peace in the Teso and Karamoja region.
The workshop held at St. Austin Social Centre in Mbale was funded by the German government.

The district commissioner for Kotido, a Police officer and a Matheniko Karimojong warrior, Apa Loris, were killed by the militia.
The paramilitary force was recruited during the Obote II regime to curb cattle raids and other acts of lawlessness by the Karimojong in Teso.
