PRIME minister Apolo Nsibambi has urged the Sabiny to stop cultural practices detrimental to the reproductive and sexual health of women.

“I want to make a special appeal to the Sabiny men to stop idolising cultural practices like female genital mutilation, which are prejudicial to reproductive and sexual health of women,” he said.

Nsibambi’s speech was read by entandikwa state minister Grace Akello during the Kapchorwa district culture day celebrations at the Boma Grounds recently.

Nsibambi said the Constitution was very on discarding cultural practices which have harmful and negative impact.

He said the Government was aware the Sabiny still had deep attachment to the horrific practice of female genital mutilation despite its negative effects on women and girls.

Nsibambi said the Government had
empowered women to fight for their rights using appropriate legal institutions to eradicate cultural practices like female genital mutilation, rape, child marriages and defilement.

He said the Constitution required women to be accorded equal dignity with men.
MPs, local councillors, women activists, elders and the clergy attended the function.
