THE current defilement law that makes the offence only triable by the High Court has come under fire from judicial officers.

The officers attending the justice, law and order sector review workshop that opened in Kampala yesterday, called for the the abolition of the death sentence on defilers and trial of the offence by the magistrates courts.

Justice minister Janat Mukwaya, principal judge Herbert Ntabgoba, the Director of Public Prosecutions, Richard Butera and police chief Maj. Gen. Katumba Wamala, said defilement constituted between 50% to 60% of capital offences, leading to congestion in prisons.
