The one-month old East African Airlines, has been designated as a COMESA airline, the chief executive Benedict Mutyaba said on Monday.
He was speaking at the end of the year party his company organised for journalists at Sitar Restaurant in Workers House.
He said that as a result of the designation, EAA were now free to move to the region’s member countries to obtain flight rights. In this respect, he said, East African Airlines was now expanding their operations to Khartoum and Asmara.
Under the COMESA arrangement, airlines from member states can exercise freedom to fly and operate in any state as long as they get the flight rights.
“Things are not easy, but we are using all the tricks in the book to survive. We are encouraged by the support from Ugandans and other travelers. This strengthens our determination to attain success,” he said.
He said in Uganda, the aviation market for passengers is not price elastic and therefore they have to find other means like the opportunity offered by COMESA.
During the party, journalists were treated to a draw where six of them won trips to Johannesburg and Nairobi.
Mutyaba said his airline is still on schedule to get a second aircraft, especially as their business model assumes that they will attain a 70% load by March 2003. A condition that automatically will force EAA management to get a second aircraft.
