The Bishop of Bunyoro-Kitara Diocese, Wilson Nkuna Turumanya, has cautioned Kibaale residents against intensifying tribal tension between indigenous Banyoro and settlers, mainly Bakiga, reports Gerald Businge. In a letter to Kibaale residents dated December 27 and signed by the Diocesan secretary, Stanley Ntagali, Turumanya called upon civil servants to use their offices responsibly to stop hatred and mistrust among the people of Kibaale. Turumanya said the role of the Church was to preach unity, peace and love. He said he felt pained by “the recent tribal divisions between our people in Kibale”. He encouraged the population to solve their problems in accordance with the constitution and to avoid violent methods. “We condemn all thought, acts and words that that divide people on tribal, religious or clan basis and those which threaten the peace and development of Kibaale and the country as a whole and the use of violent methods to solve problems,” Turumanya said. The letter comes at a time when tension is mounting in the district due to the Local Council elections, some of which are being held today.
