JACKSON Mayanja says the on-going African Nations Cup should serve as a good lesson on team consistency for Uganda.

By James BakamaJACKSON Mayanja says the on-going African Nations Cup should serve as a good lesson on team consistency for Uganda.“All the good teams in Mali comprise of players who have for long been together,” said the former Cranes and KCC player.Mayanja, currently coaching Nile Special Super League side URA/Lyantonde, was mainly moved by Liberia. “The team consists of exactly the players we faced in the Nations Cup qualifiers two years ago.” Liberia started off its campaign in the 2002 finals with a draw with Mali. The Liberian situation sharply contrasts with Uganda, whose national side has changed at a frequence only equaled by the country’s several losses.Mayanja also cited Cranes’ teams up to the early 90s. “That was a time when players used to consistently play for a minimum of ten years.”Uganda’s best case of consistence came in Accra, Ghana in 1978 when a team developed from youth sides reached the Nations Cup final.Mayanja joined Cranes as a teenager in 1987. He called it quits 13 years later in a career highlighted by professional outings in Egypt and Tunisia. He attributes the inconsistence mainly to player indiscipline. “True, our soccer administrators might have some problems, but they are not the ones who play on the field.Mayanja gave rampant strikes over money as one of the signs of indiscipline.
