THE Electoral Commission (EC) yesterday distributed photographic voters’ registers to a number of polling stations in Kampala for display ahead of the district LC5/city mayoral elections, reports Milton Olupot. The display exercise started at around 1:00pm in Makindye East. However, the exercise started much later in Nakawa, Central Division and Rubaga South. The EC deputy spokesperson, Teddy Mugote, yesterday said the display of registers in Makindye West, Kawempe North and Kawempe South begins today, while viewing in Rubaga South will begin on Wednesday. The display officers at various stations in Kampala assisted voters to cross-check their names and photographs, in an exercise expected to go on till February 6, from 8:00am to 6:00pm everyday. The elections are scheduled for February 14.The Electoral Commission chairman, Haji Aziz Kasujja, last week announced that only Kampala district will use the long-awaited photographic registers while the rest of the country will use the old registers. He said the Kampala display was a pilot project before the countrywide display of the national photographic voters’ register is done after the district council elections. The voters are expected to check for the correctness of their particulars and photographs on the register during this period. They are also expected to report to the display officers names of the dead, the underage, names of those who are not residents and those who do not originate from those areas. Kasujja said this should be utilised by those who may have objections for inclusion or exclusion of their particulars or photographs.Voters trickled into the polling stations. The exercise was expected to pick up in the evening when most voters were expected to return from their work places. No serious anomalies were reported.Ends
