US aids Bushenyi dairy industry

THE United States will continue to aid the development of the diary industry in Uganda to support the modernisation of agriculture and reduce poverty, reports Ssennoga Geoffrey.

THE United States will continue to aid the development of the diary industry in Uganda to support the modernisation of agriculture and reduce poverty, reports Ssennoga Geoffrey.This pledge was made by the US ambassador, Martin Brennan, while commissioning the Kyeitembe heifer project in Bushenyi district.He praised the efforts of Kyeitembe heifer project in transforming the lives of the poor, especially the women. He said the success of US- aided projects like Kyeitembe encourages the donor community to support development programmes in Uganda.Brennan and the USAID mission director, Don Liberi, were taken around the project by the Uganda Development Trust programme director, Joan Rutaroh.Rutaroh said Kyeitembe Farmers Association, with help from the African Development Foundation, a US- based donor agency, received sh282m to buy hybrid in-calf heifers, veterinary input products, construct zero-grazing shelters and construct a milk collecting centre. They will also install a 2,000-litre milk cooler and set up bio-gas digesters for each member. Over 124 members of the association have benefited from this project.Liberi said the US embassy and USAID would avail US$6m in the five years of support to the development and marketing of the dairy industry in Uganda.
