Mzee fells trees

A 70 year-old man , Zedekia Muyanja of Magere Village, off Gayaza Road recently surprised neighbours when he hired men to cut down all the jack fruit trees in his compound.With the area being famed for supplying jack fruit to Kaleerwe Market, the old man, a widower, eked a living from selling the fruit. He would off load a pickup full daily.On Monday, March 11, he ordered the chopping of the trees, after thieves had made it a habit to steal at night. “I have been waking up every morning only to find that some people are stealing from my trees. Being old I cannot intercept them so parity, let me cut the trees and at least burn charcoal out of them and sell,” he said as the over ten trees, some with ripe fruit were felled with chain-saws.ends
