Adar wins but CG mark still too high

JIMMY Adar won the 800m event at the Kampala Under-18 track and field meet Saturday but was short of the Commonwealth Games qualifying mark.

Adar who is from schools’ athletics giants Bombo SSS, triumphed in 1 minute, 56 seconds at the Kyambogo University ground. Mukasa Onyango from Kingston Academy was second in 1 minute, 59 seconds while William Lubwama from the same school was third at 2:04. The qualifying mark for the Commonwealth Games due in Manchester in July is 1:47.3.It was a one-two finish in the 10,000m for Standard High Schools’ Moses Kipsiro and Boniface Kiprop. The two runners missed the World Cross-country Championship in Dublin at the weekend due to lack of funding. Kipsiro won the event in 31.01 minutes, three seconds ahead of Kiprop. Kingston’s Joachim Bakunga was third at 31:53. Elsewhere, Entebbe’s Airforce school students swept the 3000m event. Yunise Chetijira won in 17 minutes, 46 second ahead of Tabisa Mwesigwa (17:59) and Ruth Chelangat (18.50). r KENYA will host the International Amateur Athletics Federation council meeting April 13-14, KAAA officials disclosed yesterday.The Nairobi meeting will be used to announce the host of the 2005 World Athletics Championships after the conclusion of this year’s event in Dublin at the weekend where Uganda won two bronze medals.ends
