Proprietors of private schools have appealed to the Ministry of Education and sports to look into the choking taxes levied on them, reports Josephine Maseruka. They said if the exorbitant taxes were not reduced, they would make education expensive and therefore increase the school dropout rates. They made the call recently at a sensitisation workshop on Information and Communication Technology.Mengo minister for education John Crysostom Muyingo said individuals who have invested in education should not be looked at as government competitors.“They shouldn’t be looked at as competitors with government who should be heavily taxed but rather as comrades supplementing government efforts to provide a vital social service,” he said.“It is therefore necessary to treat them in the same manner government schools are treated when it comes to taxation,” he added.Muyingo appealed to the government to boost the Mengo education ministry in introducing telecentres with modern libraries and sensitise others about the information technology.Ends
